Low-Water-Grasses

With spring around the corner, many are looking for new, water-wise ideas for spring planting and gardening. There are many plant and flower options to choose from, but low-water bunch grasses are often overlooked. These native grasses are ideal for California’s climate because they are naturally robust, reduce garden maintenance, develop deep root systems, and remain evergreen with minimal watering. Once established, these grasses can expand and work beautifully together to create a lush and functional landscape. There are about 300 grasses that are native to California, and each offers its own unique style and aesthetic benefit to your outdoor space. Here are three examples of low-water possibilities to consider:

Deergrass (Muhlenbergia rigens)

Deergrass is a perfect choice for ground cover and a great selection when replacing your lawn. It is very easy to grow and enjoys being planted in sandy soil and full sun although it can tolerate shade and different soil types. With its tall green leaf blades, it is a striking plant that will bring texture and movement to your landscape. Expect a pop of color in the spring as it starts to yield yellow flowers, and in the summer the seed provides food that will welcome birds. Deergrass can grow to be 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Deergrass is named because deer like to bed down in the shade under the leaves.

Purple Needlegrass (Stipa pulchra)

This grass is not only California’s most widespread native grass but it was also named California’s State Grass in 2004. The deep roots of the grass allow for the grass to adapt to low water needs. Although Purple Needlegrass has long bristle-like blades, it will attract birds and pollinators as it bears many seeds. When planting, be mindful of the spacing as it can grow up to 3 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide.

California Fescue (Festuca californica)

California Fescue is a hardy plant that is an ideal substitute for thirsty lawns. It is best suited as ground cover and can also be planted in containers that will easily elevate any landscape.

This species of grass has rough, textured leaves that are narrow but can grow long enough to a plant size of 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall. The flower cluster holds spikelets, each 1/2 to 1 inch long. The plant’s form is upright and has a fountain shape that can be a great groundcover option.
