César Chávez Day is celebrated on March 31, to celebrate the birth and legacy of César Estrada Chávez, a Mexican American labor leader and civil rights activist.
Born on March 31, 1927, to a family of migrant farm laborers, Chávez was a farmworker throughout his youth and into adulthood before becoming a civil rights leader. He experienced first-hand the hardships and injustices farm workers faced in California and across the nation. His lived experiences to life as a farm worker is what fueled his desire for change and his vision to cocreate the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers, to fight for/protect farm workers/laborers.
In honor of this observation, Save Our Water encourages all Californians to celebrate César Chávez Day, and honor farmworkers and their ongoing contributions to our state and nation.
