Sunday’s big game is a super reminder of the ways we can all reduce our water use on game day and every day.
Here in California, we have much to be proud of, from our beautiful landscapes to our winning football teams. As many Californians get ready to cheer on the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, remember there are a number of water-saving plays to conserve water inside and outside the home and to show off how proud we are to live in California.
Whether you’re cheering on the players or tuning in for the commercials this weekend, here are simple tips to kick off your water conservation efforts:
- Don’t throw out leftover ice and water. When the game clock runs out and the cleanup starts, remember to save those ice cubes and any leftover water to use for watering plants or refilling your pet’s water bowl.
- Defrost frozen foods without water. Avoid wasting water by letting your frozen food appetizers defrost overnight in the fridge instead of under running water in the sink.
- Rinse veggies and fruits without running the faucet. Fill a large bowl or pan with water to rinse vegetables and fruits for snacking rather than running the tap. The water in the bowl can be reused in your garden or to water indoor plants around the house.
- Use the dishwasher instead of handwashing dishes. If you have a dishwasher, use it for those gameday dishes. Washing full loads of dishes saves 5 to 15 gallons of water per load and uses significantly less water than washing by hand.
- Use a broom instead of a hose. Cleaning up outside for game day? Use a broom instead of a hose or power-washer to clean outdoor areas and save 8 to 18 gallons of water every minute.
- Wash full loads of laundry. As fans prepare to wash and wear their favorite jerseys, make sure to fill the washer with a full load to save water.
As dry conditions are expected to continue over the coming weeks, it’s vital that Californians come together as a team to do our part and conserve water now.
